Do you ever catch yourself wondering who someone really is at BAVPA? Wonder no longer! Senior Theatre major Joy Perry is on a mission to interview students, staff, administrators and faculty at Performing Arts so you can stay in the know.
Joy
Hi! My name is Joy Perry and I am here with…
Ms. Farinacci
Hi, I'm Ms. Farinacci! I'm the librarian here at Performing Arts.
Joy
So Ms. Farinacci, what made you want to become a librarian?
Ms. Farinacci
I really didn't for a very long time. My mother was also a school librarian, and I resisted it, okay. So my first thing that I really wanted to do was become a social worker. I wanted to help people; and, ultimately, after I got a job at the public library, I saw that it actually was for me, and I can still help people in the way that I want to. So, originally I did not want to be a librarian. It's crazy. Jobs change.
Joy
Yep, that’s true! So now that you’re a librarian, what steps have you taken to lead kids to use the library more and become more interested in reading?
Ms. Farinacci
That's a great question. I have seen a lot of change over the past 5 years or so that I've been here. I really try to take an interest in what our students actually want to learn as well as stuff that is part of our curriculum that we need to learn.
Joy
How do you select new books for your library collection?
Ms. Farinacci
Every year, every single year, I ask teachers and all students what they would like to see. “Hey, uh, we need more x, y, z books, or I'm really interested in this subject” and so I really do my best to try to make sure that our library represents the students and the people who are performing arts.
Joy
Oh, so you take recommendations?
Ms. Farinacci
Yes, every single year. I have little note sheets. Like, if you want a specific book or a specific author, there’s a place to write that down. If you just want certain genres or certain topics there’s a space for that as well.
Joy
So, you try to get a diverse selection?
Ms. Farinacci
Absolutely! Not only to reflect the types of people that we have of all walks of life, but also we have so many kids who have so many interests as well. So, that can be a little challenging sometimes, but I really do try to get books that I think are gonna represent our school community here.
Joy
Do you have any advice on how students can make the most out of their library resources?
Ms. Farinacci
That's a great question. Just come in and ask, really. You don't know what's out there until you come ask a librarian. Well, any librarian can show you all the free widely accessible resources, not only just books, but music, movies, articles, homework help, live events that happen in public libraries. I think part of making sure that students really use the library is also to promote other libraries. This stuff is here for free. We live in a community. Let's use it!
Joy
Just one more question. Just for fun, what is your favorite book or author and why?
Ms. Farinacci
If I'm being honest, my favorite book ever is a children's picture book called Frederick by Leo Leoni. It's about this kind of lazy field mouse who is very creative and imaginative. All the other mice criticize him for not working hard but then when the winter season comes, he's able to tell them poems, and he describes the colors of the paintings that he saw. And so to me, I don't know, it just sort of reminds me that creativity is useful, and people have a lot of skill sets to bring. I know it got real heavy real quick, but it was a really nice metaphor for all the things that humankind can bring.
Joy
Yes, that's true. I feel that children's book mirrors what we experience today with how the arts aren’t as appreciated as practical jobs
Ms. Farinacci
Right, science and math are important too but we need the arts. It shows that we need to be balanced as human beings, but I also just love his illustration style. He does collage and I love that. Yeah, I don't read adult books.
Joy
I get it, not everything is everyone’s cup of tea. Well, thank you for talking with me today.
Ms. Farinacci
Thank you for having me. I appreciate it. Thanks, Joy.
