The Truth by Kaas Scriven
The truthful ugliness of the word pretty
Always having to be witty
Skinny
Not too showy
Or forgiving
But forgiving enough to let a man in
And if they hurt you
It’s your clothing
You should have covered up
“It’s always the women.”
But never the one who actually did it
We get put in these shackles
We get the prison for life
But the true prison is being pretty
Because we have been scoffed with
Mocked
Blocked
Oppressed for years
Even in the award shows that were meant for us.
And when we get the slightest bit of freedom
The narrative changes
And all of the sudden
“It’s always those feminists who talk”
“Men are the ones who get mocked”
Well I hope you like my voice
Cause as a woman
You will never understand the true feeling
Of having to hold your keys to your right side at night
With fear in your eyes, your heart
As you walk.
